a home from home

Eritrea, Asmara 2015.

Absent from the Italian school curricula and ignored by the mainstream narrative, the Italy’s colonial past still remains a deep silence, so much so that nowadays the immigration law does not provide any support or preferential treatment for Eritrean immigrants.

In Asmara, Italian “home from home” and playground for architecture experiments for almost 60 years, this silence openly conflicts with the colonialism intrusive impact on the society, brutally visualised by a contaminated urban space and everydayness.

Aesthetically appealing for foreigners, this time capsule is a reminder of the humiliating fascist apartheid system for many locals.
